Sourcing prices and figures
Every cost figure is labelled by origin: a vendor's published price, a typical market range, a quote a reader has shared, or an illustrative example. Ranges beat single numbers where the market is genuinely wide, and we say what pushes a project to the top or bottom of one. Statistics, quotes, testimonials and credentials are never invented or borrowed without attribution.
Showing the arithmetic
If a conclusion rests on a calculation, the calculation appears on the page with its inputs, so you can substitute your own and reach a different answer. Our calculators use the same formulas the guides describe, and each one names its assumptions.
Review schedule
Pricing-heavy guides are rechecked at least twice a year, everything else at least annually, and sooner when a vendor changes its plans. A review that changes nothing still updates the date, and the page says the figures were confirmed rather than revised.
Editing before publication
Each piece is researched and written by a member of the editorial team and read by a second person before it goes live, who checks the numbers against their sources and pushes back on anything asserted without support. Drafts that cannot survive that read are held back rather than published thin.
Advertising and editorial are separate
Coverage, placement, links and rankings are not for sale, and no advertiser sees a piece before publication. Display advertising sits in labelled slots outside the reading column, and is styled so it cannot be mistaken for something we wrote.
Affiliate links
A link to a product we already recommend may earn us a commission. It does not change a verdict or the order of a comparison, and any piece containing one carries a notice before its first recommendation. See the affiliate disclosure for the full picture.
Corrections
Factual errors are fixed promptly. A substantive correction is noted on the page; typos and broken links are fixed silently. Report anything that looks wrong through our contact page.
Not professional advice
This is general information for people running businesses. It is not accounting, legal, tax or financial advice and cannot account for your circumstances. For decisions with material consequences, speak to a qualified professional who can see your books.
Reader privacy
The calculators run in your browser and retain nothing. Beyond that we keep data collection to a minimum, as described in our privacy policy.
