Local SEO for Service Businesses: The Work That Moves the Needle

Twelve tasks in priority order, with a clear line between what matters and what is busywork.

By Business Resource Hub EditorialPublished Updated 10 min read

Local search is unusually fair: a one-van business can outrank a national chain in its own town. It rewards accuracy, reviews and proof of proximity — none of which requires a large budget, all of which require follow-through.

The high-impact half

  1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, including categories, service areas, hours and payment methods.
  2. Choose the most specific primary category available. 'Emergency plumber' beats 'contractor'.
  3. Add fifteen or more real photographs of your own work, and refresh them quarterly.
  4. Build a steady review habit: ask every satisfied customer, by text, with a direct link, on the day the job finishes.
  5. Reply to every review, including the awkward ones, in a measured tone.
  6. Create one page per service and one page per town you genuinely serve, each with distinct content, real projects and local detail.

Steady beats sudden

Ten reviews a month for six months is worth far more than sixty in one week. Consistency looks like a working business; a spike looks like a campaign.

The maintenance half

  • Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere it appears online.
  • List in the directories customers in your trade actually use, not fifty low-quality ones.
  • Add local business structured data to your site so search engines can read your details unambiguously.
  • Keep hours accurate, including holidays — a wrong closing time costs a job and a review.
  • Publish two or three genuinely useful pages a year rather than monthly filler.
  • Earn a handful of local links: a supplier's stockist page, a sponsored team, a local news mention.

What to stop doing

TacticWhy to drop it
Doorway pages for 40 townsThin, near-duplicate pages are filtered and can suppress the whole site
Keyword stuffing your business nameAgainst Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended
Bulk directory submissionsLittle effect, and cleaning up wrong data later costs hours
Buying reviewsDetectable, removable, and existential if a customer notices

Measuring it

Track calls and direction requests from your business profile, organic enquiries from your site, and rankings for the three phrases that actually describe what you sell in the towns you serve. Review quarterly, not weekly — local rankings fluctuate enough day to day to make short-term panic the main risk.
